An Entirely New Approach to the Treatment of Depression
This FDA-cleared treatment for Depression and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is Drug-Free and Non-invasive. It’s called MeRTSM
Simply stated, magnetic fields are used to stimulate and balance brain function, guided by very sophisticated imaging and diagnostics.
MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, utilizes rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). It is FDA cleared for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and has been used successfully in the treatment of Depression, MDD, and for those who did not respond well to medications or tolerate them well due to side-effects.
We know Depression makes life hard and that it can affect people of all ages.
We have some understanding of how you are feeling and we know how tough it can be. For some, medications can help. But some don’t respond as well, or can’t handle the side-effects, or just don’t like having to take them. We offer an entirely different approach to treating Depression. It’s non-invasive, drug-free, and lasting. There is hope.
Depression can result in a loss of interest and a persistent feeling of sadness. Depression is also referred to as Major Depressive Disorder or Clinical Depression. Depression affects how you behave, think and feel, and can lead to a wide variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have difficulty performing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel that life isn’t worth living. It’s something you can’t simply “snap out” of.
Patients who are clinically depressed have distinct markers that are visible in their EEG studies. What is generally seen is an imbalance in brainwave activity between the left and right hemispheres, which is called asymmetry. The MeRT protocol identifies the asymmetry by strengthening the brainwave activity which can reduce depression symptoms.
The Mayo Clinic reports that more than three million people are diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder every year and far more with Clinical Depression. They also report that new research is confirming that factors that may contribute to Depression do cause changes in brain function to include altered activity of certain neural circuits in the brain.
While rTMS is a more generalized approach to magnetic stimulation, because it is only able to target a single location in the brain with one frequency, MeRT is much more tailored to address your specific brain patterns. With MeRT we use very sophisticated diagnostics and imaging to customize treatment protocols for each individual. tailored based on the location, frequency, and amount of power used by the magnet, specific to each person’s unique condition. MeRT has been shown to improve brain communication, synchronization, and can lead to significant and long-lasting improvements.
MeRT is a non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive treatment that has been used successfully to treat depression, including depression that has not responded to medication or other therapies.

Symptoms of Depression, Clinical Depression and Major Depressive Disorder
Depression, also called Clinical Depression or Major Depressive Disorder, can have a range of symptoms and degrees of severity for different people. While antidepressant medication can help some people, it doesn’t help all, and it isn’t always the right treatment for everybody. Medication can also have unpleasant side effects, both short-term and long-term.
Depression, whether acute or chronic, can have debilitating effects on quality of life. Sometimes there are events that trigger depression, but in others, the etiology is of an unknown cause. Regardless of the cause, MeRT can help.
Symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder Can Include:
- Feeling overwhelmingly sad or hopeless
- Feeling depressed or down for longer than 2-weeks
- Difficulty completing everyday activities
- Emotional outbursts
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Agitation or Irritability
- Performance issues at work or school
- Lowered self-esteem
- Lack of interest in relationships, work, or social activities
- Feelings of isolation
- Extreme fatigue, physical and/or mental
- Sleeping too little or sleeping too much or other sleep issues
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering things
- Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
- Dwelling over past events or failures
- Anxiety
- Headaches, neck or back pain
- Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US and suicide attempts by teenagers have increased in recent years. Major Depression Disorder is a serious illness and getting the right kind of treatment can be life-saving.
If you or someone close to you is feeling suicidal, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273 TALK (1-800-273-8255).
What is MeRT?
MeRT, stands for Magnetic Resonance Therapy. MeRT is a tailored, highly individualized form of TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. In simpler terms, we use magnetic waves to stimulate specifically targeted areas of the brain that have been found to not be communicating or functioning optimally.
It is painless and completely non-invasive. You are fully conscious and there are no drugs or anesthesia involved. It’s simply magnetic waves that stimulate and balance the neurological functioning of your brain.
This is determined through sophisticated diagnostic tools and imaging and is used to plan a tailored treatment approach just for you.
Studies have shown that brain wave oscillations are altered in patients suffering from conditions such as Depression and Major Depression Disorder (MDD) as well as other conditions. MeRT treatment protocols involve the use of a magnetic field to balance and stimulate brain function. The technology involves using brain imaging and sophisticated diagnostics to customize treatment for each individual with a personalized protocol, tailored based on the location, frequency, and amount of power used by the magnet, specific to each person’s unique condition. The objective with MeRT is to improve brain communication and synchronization, leading to significant and long-lasting improvements.
Initial MeRT research was done by the U.S. Department of Defense for veterans returning from combat. This article that was published in Defense One further explains this research and the benefits that MeRT had on those who, suffering from TBI, PTSD, and Depression, were treated with MeRT. Many more studies have been completed in the private sector on other conditions.

For me, depression was the constant feeling of, ‘I want to quit’ and retreat to my home, except I already would be home…MeRT helped me shed this feeling in less than 2 weeks. I couldn’t believe I had spent so many years feeling this way.” – MeRT Patient

Finding out if this Treatment is Right for You
We understand that MeRT is a relatively new, cutting edge treatment and you may not be certain if this is right for you. But this is not a decision that needs to be made right away or all alone. Your first step would be a simple phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. Here you can discuss your symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want and have her explain the protocols, fees, and details of Treatment.
If you are interested in taking the next step in seeing if MeRT treatment is right for you, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation with the doctor to talk about your symptoms and the results of your EEG. Each of these appointments are about 45 minutes to an hour in length.
At the first appointment, our neuro technician will perform an EEG and an EKG. Both are simple, painless, and non-invasive tests to see exactly what is happening in your brain.
At the second appointment, a few days later when your test results are in and have been analyzed, you will have a one on one consultation with the doctor. This appointment can be done virtually from the comfort of your own home. Here you will discuss your test results, answer any additional questions that you may have, and together determine if you (or your child, if this is about your child) are a candidate for treatment.
If you and the doctor then decide to move forward with MeRT, the next step is what we call the Assessment Period, where we will perform a short period of several days of treatment, followed by a new EEG to see if you are responding to the treatment. This is assessed based on the new EEG results as compared to the initial one done before treatment started, as well as symptom improvements.
If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements starting to take place, and we can then schedule for the additional treatment duration. Treatments are done daily, Monday to Friday in two-week increments. A typical treatment session takes about 45 minutes. The patient will sit in a chair while the neurotechnician administers the treatment via a hand-held magnet that is held near the scalp. The magnetic impulses are delivered for 6-8 seconds each minute. You may feel a slight sensation while the treatment is occurring, but it is not painful or uncomfortable. No medications are used and the patient is fully awake throughout.
MeRT treatments will usually go for anywhere from 6 – 8 weeks. In some cases, additional treatment time is recommended to get the best possible results from MeRT. Each individual is different, and protocols may vary. Your provider will have regularly scheduled follow-up EEGs and meet with you to closely manage your progress.
